Artist's Description
A female Kingfisher with its prey a Stickleback prior to entering the nest cavity.The Common Kingfisher is often seen as a flash of Electric Blue as it is disturbed from its perch.Kingfishers like fast moving water with steep banks which they excavaute upto a metre deep.This is lined on the bottom with fish bones to stop the eggs from rolling out.
The young normally leave the nest after approxiamately twenty eight days ,adults will normally feed the young until the second clutch is ready to hatch.This then forces the young down stream to fend for themselves which a large percentage will drown .
The Kingfisher is thought to be UKs favourite bird overtaking the Robin.It is a protected species and a special licence is required to photograph them near or at the nest site.
